Apples and the Letter A.

From the Preschool:
"This week we introduced the children to the alphabet starting with the letter A.  We had fun with our alphabet action song and learning the new words uppercase and lowercase letters.  We did many activities in our apple theme, including describing them, looking at sizes, weighing them, and we even tried to to balance them on our head ( after reading the story Ten Apples Up on Top).  In our art area we used scissors, glue, and finger paint to make our apple projects.  We ended the  week with apple tasting - red, green, and yellow apples, and made a graph of the results.  Clifford's Big word this week is "Pip".  If you ask your child what it means, they should be able to tell you (it has to do with apples)!  Next week we will be continuing the letter A and learning more about Autumn."

Kindergarten and the Five Senses!

From The Kindergarten: "We have conducted many experiments this week in class.  Listening to soft and loud sounds and identifying them. Seeing all there is to see. Tasting sweet, sour, salty, and bitter foods.  Smelling many different smells, with cinnamon being a class favorite.  Touching all types of textures and classifying them.  Kindergarten has learned so much using their five senses!"

Preschool Seasons

From the Preschool:
"This week we introduced the four seasons to the children, asking the question, "What do we see, hear, feel, taste, and touch in each season?" Monday "Summer Fun" included a "pretend beach party", making sunglasses in art; shell and number counting and matching; beach ball throwing and catching and lots of movement activity as we listened to the "Beach Boys"!   Tuesday "Autumn Fun" included learning about fall colors and making sponge paint leaves.  Wednesday "Winter Fun" - We read The Mitten Tree , a great story about giving and sharing and we also made our own mittens to hang.  We did a mitten/number match game along with talking about left and right and things that are in a pair. Thursday "Spring Fun" - We went from flowers growing to our own "Easter Egg Hunt"! Thanks to everyone for bringing in so many things for our season week."

Antioch Students Recognized as Outstanding Artists

This year our 3-7th grade art classes participated in an art contest sponsored by Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.  Stellwagen Bank is New England's only marine sanctuary located between Cape Ann and Cape Cod, about 25 miles off the coast of Boston.  This year the contest was entitled 'Amazing Ocean Creatures of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary'. Their artwork depicted marine life found within the sanctuary, students also had to learn the scientific name of their ocean animal and write a few sentences about the animal or their artwork.  This years contest had 726 entries from all over the country and 5 Antioch art students were recognized as having outstanding works of art.  Judges included professional artists, graphic designers, marine scientists, exhibit and public outreach specialists, government officials and other individuals familiar with sanctuary species. At the end of June, winning artwork will be posted on the sanctuary website Mrs. Carter and the entire Antioch community is so proud of the students who participated and the effort that they put into their art work. The following pieces of art received honorable mention in the contest:
